When dealing with groups of characters, most people tend to work in threes for some reason...it's a nice number to work with, I must admit. There has even been some discussion on how the number three is engrained into the "collective consciousness" of people worldwide, so I've heard. Many books and TV series feature a cast of three people who serve as the main characters. In cases like these, three is the number that seems most comfortable, and at the same time has just enough dynamic to keep the interest of the audience.

Still, the more the merrier, I always say...but there is something to be said for simplicity.
